Basil’s Block — August

Well, hello there, garden friends!

August is one of those months when the garden looks like it ought to be slowing down—but it most certainly is not. Tomatoes are ripening almost faster than you can pick them, summer vegetables are still producing, and many flowers are busy making seeds for next year.

This is also a good time to leave a few healthy flowers alone after they finish blooming. Those dried flower heads may not look like much, but many are packed with seeds that birds can enjoy—and some can be collected and saved for next spring.

Take a walk around your garden this month and look closely. You may find seed pods where flowers used to be, butterflies visiting late-summer blooms, and birds already taking advantage of nature’s pantry.

Basil’s Backyard Tip: Before you tidy everything away, ask yourself: Could something out here still use it?

Sometimes the best thing a gardener can do is leave a little bit of the garden wild. 🌱🐦🦋

Who Told Everybody to Pick Me?

Apparently, August is the time when gardeners start wandering around squeezing cabbage heads and asking, “Is this one ready?”

First of all, keep your hands to yourself.

Second, since nobody around here seems capable of minding their own vegetables, I suppose I should explain.

A cabbage is usually ready to harvest when the head feels firm and solid when gently squeezed. If it still feels loose or soft, give it more time. But don't wait forever—an overripe cabbage head can split, especially after heavy rain or sudden changes in moisture.

And when harvest day finally arrives, use a sharp knife to cut the head at the base and leave some of the outer leaves and stem behind. Some cabbage varieties may even reward you with a few smaller heads later.
